When to Call an Emergency Plumber in Sydney
Not every plumbing problem is an emergency. A dripping tap can wait until morning. A slow-draining sink can wait until the next day. But some situations can cause thousands of dollars in damage in minutes — and those need an emergency plumber, right now.
Here's how to tell the difference, and what to do in the first critical minutes.
True Emergencies — Call Now
Burst Pipe
A burst pipe can flood your home at a rate of 20–30 litres per minute. In 10 minutes, that's a room full of water. This is always an emergency.
What to do:
- Turn off your main water valve (usually near the front of the house or at the meter)
- Turn on a tap to drain the remaining water from the pipes
- Call 0452 317 892 immediately
Gas Leak
If you smell gas (a rotten-egg odour) inside or outside your home, this is a life-threatening emergency. Gas is explosive and a leak can fill a room in minutes.
What to do:
- Do NOT use any electrical switches, phones, or flames — a spark can ignite gas
- Turn off the gas at the meter if you can safely reach it
- Open doors and windows to ventilate
- Leave the house and call 0452 317 892 from outside
Sewage Backup
If sewage is backing up into your toilet, shower, or floor drain, you have a blocked sewer line. This is a health hazard — sewage contains bacteria and pathogens.
What to do:
- Stop using all water in the house
- Keep children and pets away from the affected area
- Call 0452 317 892 immediately
Flooding from Stormwater
If heavy rain is flooding your yard, garage, or home through stormwater drains, you need urgent help. Stormwater flooding can cause structural damage and electrical hazards.
What to do:
- Move valuables and electronics to higher ground
- If water is entering the house, try to block the flow with sandbags or towels
- Call 0452 317 892
No Hot Water (in Some Cases)
No hot water is an emergency if:
- You have a gas hot water system and you smell gas near it
- The system is leaking water onto electrical components
- You're elderly, have a disability, or have young children and need hot water for health reasons
Otherwise, no hot water can usually wait until the next day for a standard service call.
Not Emergencies — Can Wait Until Morning
- A dripping tap
- A slow-draining sink (unless multiple fixtures are affected)
- A running toilet (unless it's about to overflow)
- A noisy hot water system (unless it's leaking)
- A minor leak under a sink (put a bucket under it)
What to Do While You Wait for the Plumber
- Turn off the water at the main valve if there's any leak or flood
- Turn off the gas at the meter if you smell gas
- Move valuables away from water
- Take photos of the damage for insurance
- Don't attempt repairs yourself — you can make it worse and void your insurance
