No Hot Water in Sydney? A Quick Troubleshooting Guide
No Hot Water in Sydney? A Quick Troubleshooting Guide
There's nothing quite like the shock of turning on the shower and getting a face full of cold water. Before you call a plumber, there are a few things you can check yourself — some hot water problems have simple fixes that don't need a professional.
Here's a quick troubleshooting guide for the most common hot water issues we see across Sydney.
Electric Storage Systems
No Hot Water at All
-
Check the circuit breaker. Your hot water system has its own breaker in your switchboard. If it's tripped, flip it back. If it trips again immediately, call a plumber or electrician — there's a fault in the system.
-
Check the off-peak switch. Many electric systems are on an off-peak tariff and only heat at night. If your system was switched off during the day, it may just need time to reheat. Wait an hour and check again.
-
Check the system's isolation switch. Some systems have a switch on the unit itself. Make sure it's on.
Lukewarm or Not Hot Enough
-
Check the thermostat setting. It should be set to 60°C (to prevent bacteria growth) but not higher. If it's been bumped down, turn it back up.
-
Sediment buildup. If your system is more than 5 years old and hasn't been flushed, sediment at the bottom of the tank can insulate the water from the heating element. A plumber can flush the tank.
-
Failed element or thermostat. These are the most common component failures. A plumber can test and replace them — often a same-day repair.
Gas Storage Systems
No Hot Water at All
-
Check the gas supply. Make sure the gas isolation valve near the system is open. If you have other gas appliances (cooktop, heater), check if they're working — if not, your gas supply may be interrupted.
-
Check the pilot light. Older gas systems have a pilot light that can blow out in strong winds or if the thermocouple fails. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to relight it. If it won't stay lit, the thermocouple needs replacing.
-
Check the gas meter. If you've run out of LPG (bottled gas), or your natural gas supply is interrupted, the system won't heat.
Lukewarm or Running Out Quickly
-
Sediment in the tank — same as electric systems, a flush can help.
-
Burner issue — a dirty or partially blocked gas burner won't heat efficiently. A plumber can clean and service the burner.
Continuous Flow (Instantaneous) Gas Systems
System Won't Ignite
-
Check the water flow rate. Continuous flow systems need a minimum flow rate to ignite. If your tap is only partially open, the system may not fire. Open the hot tap fully.
-
Check the gas supply. Same as above — make sure gas is available.
-
Check the system's display. Many modern systems show an error code. Note the code — it tells the plumber exactly what's wrong.
Water Not Hot Enough
-
Check the temperature setting on the system's controller. It may have been adjusted down.
-
Cold water mixing. If your shower mixer is faulty, it may be adding too much cold water. Try running the hot tap at the basin — if that's hot, the shower mixer is the issue.
