Is a Home Water Filtration System Worth It in Sydney?
Is a Home Water Filtration System Worth It in Sydney?
Sydney's tap water is among the safest in the world. It's treated, tested, and meets strict Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. So why would you bother installing a water filtration system in your Sydney home?
The answer comes down to three things: taste, long-term health, and protecting your appliances.
What's Actually in Sydney's Tap Water
Sydney Water treats water from Warragamba Dam and the Blue Mountains catchment. By the time it reaches your tap, it's been chlorinated, fluoridated, and filtered. It's safe to drink — but that doesn't mean it's as clean as it could be.
Here's what a filtration system can remove that the treatment process doesn't fully address:
Chlorine and Chloramines
Chlorine is added to kill bacteria, and it does its job well. But it also gives water a chemical taste and smell. If your tea or coffee tastes slightly "off," chlorine is often the reason. A carbon filter removes chlorine completely.
Sediment and Rust
Older pipes in established Sydney suburbs — the Inner West, the North Shore, the Eastern Suburbs — can introduce sediment and rust into your water. It's not harmful, but it's not pleasant, and it can discolour your water after maintenance work on the mains.
Microplastics
Studies have found microplastics in most municipal water supplies worldwide. Sydney is no exception. A reverse osmosis (RO) system removes microplastics, as do high-quality carbon block filters.
Hardness and Scale
Sydney's water is moderately hard. Hard water leaves scale buildup in kettles, on shower screens, and inside hot water systems and dishwashers. Over time, scale reduces the efficiency and lifespan of these appliances. A water softener or RO system prevents scale.
Types of Filtration Systems
Under-Sink Carbon Filter ($200–$500 installed)
The most common and affordable option. A single cartridge under the sink filters water at one tap. Great for drinking water — removes chlorine, sediment, and improves taste. Cartridges need replacing every 6–12 months.
Whole-Home Filtration ($1,500–$3,000 installed)
A larger filter installed at the main water entry to your home. Every tap, shower, and appliance gets filtered water. Ideal for removing sediment and chlorine from all water, protecting your hot water system and appliances from scale.
Reverse Osmosis System ($800–$2,000 installed)
The most thorough filtration available for home use. Removes chlorine, sediment, microplastics, heavy metals, fluoride, and dissolved solids. Produces water that's as pure as bottled. Typically installed under the sink with its own dedicated tap.
Is It Worth It?
For most Sydney homes, the answer is yes — at least an under-sink carbon filter for drinking water. The improvement in taste is immediate and noticeable, and the cost is modest.
A whole-home system is worth it if you have hard water, older pipes, or you want to protect your hot water system and appliances from scale. The upfront cost is higher, but the protection of your appliances pays for itself over time.
Reverse osmosis is worth it if you want the purest possible drinking water, or if you're concerned about specific contaminants like fluoride or heavy metals.
Professional Installation
Water filtration systems must be installed by a licensed plumber. Incorrect installation can cause leaks, reduce water pressure, or bypass the filter entirely.
At Tru Blu Plumbing, we supply and install all types of water filtration systems across greater Sydney. We'll recommend the right system for your home and usage — not just the most expensive option.
