Blocked Drain in Sydney? Here's Exactly What to Do
Blocked Drain in Sydney? Here's Exactly What to Do
A blocked drain is one of those problems that starts small and escalates fast. One day your sink is draining a little slowly, the next you've got sewage backing up into your bathroom. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can mean the difference between a quick fix and a major mess.
Here's the step-by-step guide for Sydney homeowners.
Step 1: Stop Using the Affected Fixture
The moment you notice slow drainage, gurgling, or a bad smell, stop using that fixture. Every flush, every tap, every shower pushes more water into a line that can't drain. If the blockage is in your main sewer line, that water has nowhere to go but back up.
If multiple fixtures are affected — your sink, shower, and toilet all drain slowly — the blockage is in the main line. Stop using all water in the house and call a plumber immediately.
Step 2: Try a Plunger (Sink or Basin Only)
For a single blocked sink or basin, a cup plunger can sometimes clear a minor blockage. Fill the sink with a few centimetres of water, place the plunger over the drain, and push down firmly 5–10 times.
Do not use chemical drain cleaners. They rarely clear a real blockage, they damage your pipes, and they make it dangerous for a plumber to work on the drain later.
Step 3: Check Your Gully Trap
Most Sydney homes have an overflow relief gully (ORG) outside — a small grated drain near the house. If water is overflowing from it, your main sewer line is blocked. This is a health hazard. Stop using all water and call a plumber immediately.
Step 4: Call a Licensed Plumber
If the plunger hasn't worked, or if multiple fixtures are affected, it's time to call a professional. A licensed plumber will:
- Run a CCTV camera down the drain to see exactly what's causing the blockage and where it is
- Clear the blockage with high-pressure hydro-jetting or an electric drain machine
- Inspect the pipe for damage — cracks, tree root intrusion, or collapsed sections
- Advise on prevention — whether you need pipe relining, root cutting, or maintenance
Common Causes of Blocked Drains in Sydney
Sydney's mix of established and newer suburbs creates different drainage problems:
- Established suburbs (Inner West, North Shore, Eastern Suburbs): Tree roots in old clay or earthenware sewer lines are the #1 cause. Mature trees in older gardens send roots into pipe joints seeking water.
- Newer estates (North West Growth Corridor, South West Growth Corridor): Construction debris in stormwater pipes, incorrect pipe grading, and grease buildup in kitchen sinks.
- Western Sydney foothills: Tree roots and ground movement cracking older pipes.
What Not to Do
- Don't use chemical drain cleaners — they damage pipes and don't work on real blockages
- Don't ignore it — a partial blockage becomes a full backup, usually at the worst possible time
- Don't try to rod the drain yourself — without a CCTV camera you can't see what you're doing, and you can damage the pipe or push the blockage further in
