5 Warning Signs Your Drain Is About to Block

A blocked drain rarely happens without warning. In almost every case, your plumbing gives you clear signals days or even weeks before the blockage becomes a full backup. The trick is knowing what to look for — and acting before you're standing in ankle-deep water at 11pm.

Here are the five most common warning signs we see across Sydney homes every week.

1. Water Drains Slowly

This is the most obvious sign, and the one most homeowners ignore. If your kitchen sink takes longer than a few seconds to empty, or your shower starts pooling around your ankles, you have a partial blockage forming somewhere in the line. It won't fix itself — it will only get worse.

Slow drainage usually means a buildup of grease, soap scum, hair, or food scraps is narrowing the pipe. Left untreated, it solidifies and eventually seals the pipe completely.

2. Gurgling Sounds

If your drain or toilet makes a gurgling noise after water flows through it, air is trapped in the line. That air is being pushed up through the water seal because something further down the pipe is restricting flow.

Gurgling is often the first sign of a blockage — it can appear days before the drain starts running slow. If you hear it, don't wait for the backup. Call a plumber.

3. Foul Odours

A bad smell coming from a drain is a sign that organic matter is decomposing inside the pipe. Food scraps, grease, and hair rot inside the drain and produce sewer gases that push back up into your home.

If you smell sewage near a drain that's otherwise working, there's a buildup inside the pipe that needs to be cleared before it becomes a full blockage.

4. Multiple Fixtures Draining Slowly

If your kitchen sink, bathroom basin, and shower all drain slowly at the same time, the blockage is in your main sewer line — not in an individual fixture pipe.

This is a more serious situation. A main line blockage can cause sewage to back up into every fixture in the house. Call a plumber immediately.

5. Toilet Water Rising When You Flush

If the water level in your toilet bowl rises higher than normal when you flush, or drops lower than usual when it's just sitting, there's a blockage or venting issue in the sewer line.

A rising water level on flush is a warning that the next flush could overflow. Don't risk it — get it checked.

What to Do

If you notice any of these signs, the most important thing is not to ignore it. A partial blockage is far easier and cheaper to clear than a full backup.

At Tru Blu Plumbing, we use CCTV drain cameras to pinpoint the exact cause and location of the blockage, then clear it with high-pressure hydro-jetting — no guesswork, no mess.

Call 0452 317 892 at the first sign of trouble and we'll have a licensed plumber at your door, often the same day.
